Thanksgiving musings

What exactly does Thanksgiving mean to you? For me it’s a time of reflection, a time to think about the many people and memories I am grateful for, a time to express gratitude for whomever and whatever brings me joy in my life.

I often write these things down and store them somewhere, and this past weekend as I was cleaning out old files to make way for the new, I stumbled upon some beautiful notes written to me from others as well as some written by me to others. The overall theme of these notes was appreciation for something I had done for someone else or the reverse. To be honest, I had forgotten almost all of these acts of kindness that I committed, but it was incredibly rewarding to reread these notes written by so many people in my past. It was a timely reminder that giving is so rewarding!

It reminded me how important it is to express gratitude in writing whenever possible. I take great pride in sending handwritten thank you cards to people instead of writing an email. There is something about receiving a handwritten note that has so much more impact for me, but regardless of how you express thanks, whether in an email or a card, the most important thing is to just do it!

So as I complete my shopping and get busy preparing our family’s special dishes, I will once again reflect on how lucky I am in all aspects of my life: my family, my friends, my work, my neighbors, my home, my health. Everyone has problems and I am no exception, but my attitude is focused on the positive, trying to find the half full vs half empty, spending my time with people who bring me joy and happiness.
